A prototype for the BMW/Toyota joint-venture sports car has been spotted for the first time while undergoing cold weather testing. The test mule seen here is believed to be a prototype for the BMW version of the sports car.

The BMW version of the two-door is believed to be under development as a replacement for the current Z4. It will compete with vehicle like the Mercedes-Benz SLC and Porsche Boxster, and should have an overall footprint similar to those vehicles.

The engine and rear-wheel drive chassis of the Z4 successor will be sourced from BMW, but the sports car could gain hybrid technology from Toyota's involvement in the project. In fact, we've heard that BMW could offer the next Z4 with 2.0L and 3.0L gas engines mated to a hybrid system.

The current Z4 employs a retractable hardtop roof, but it looks as though the next iteration of the car could be equipped with a simpler soft top setup. That decision could also shave a few pounds from the car's curb weight.

The Toyota version of the car, meanwhile, will likely resurrect the Supra name. Targeting vehicles like the Porsche 911 and the Mercedes-AMG GT, it could come exclusively with a BMW-sourced six-cylinder engine mated to hybrid system, netting a total system output of 500 horsepower. In order to differentiate it from the BMW, the Supra would be available as a coupe only.

The BMW Z4 will be the first of the two vehicle to launch, likely sometime in 2018. The Toyota Supra will follow about a year later.
